Grist mill now a historic landmark.

Grist mill will live again.
A grist mill from yesteryear, Cockram Mill was built in 1884.
Most residents of the area at that time depended on a water powered
grist mill for
fresh cornmeal, wheat flour and buckwheat flour. At one
time, Cockram Mill even
generated electricity for the area. Refurbished in
circa 1920, Cockram Mill is
now listed with the National Landmark Registry.
Many long-time residents still
remember the grist mill when it operated at full
capacity. The mill derived it's
power from the Dan River. The headwaters
of the Dan River originate in the
mountain top meadows, hence the name
of the area - Meadows of Dan.
Several years ago during a flood, the dam gave way. What was once Cockram Mill Pond
has now reverted to it's original state. The
exciting news is that after 6 long years
of hard work, we
have finally received the proper permits to re-build the dam!
Construction
is scheduled to begin in the near future on the complete restoration
of the Dan
River Dam. Local residents are ecstatic that the grist mill, Cockram Mill,
under water power, will once
again grind cornmeal and flour.
